Prepare your application so that the employer can understand your motivation and how your skills relate to those outlined on the job description. Complete the three steps below to get started!
1. Research the sector
Complete some introductory research about the purpose of investment management to help prepare your application.
You can also find out more about the investment management sector on The Investment Association website.
J.P. Morgan Asset Management, an Investment20/20 member, has created short films to explain the sector.
2. Research the employer
You may find it useful to find the answers to the below questions to help you get started on your employer research:
- What are the organisation values?
- How is their organisation structured?
- What information can you find about the investment strategy?
- Are they a global firm?
- Have they had any merger or acquisitions in the recent past?
- What is their approach to diversity and inclusion?
This research will help you to become familiar with the organisation and will enable you to reference key information in your application and interview answers.

3. Research the role
Do these three things before an interview and as part of your overall application process:
- Re-read the job description, highlight the skills that the employer requires and identify your experiences that demonstrate you have these skills.
- Save the job description as once the role closes it will disappear from the website.
- Highlight anything on the job description that you would like to better understand.
You can also watch short films by J.P. Morgan Asset Management to explore careers in investment management here.
Watch inspiring people from a wide range of backgrounds share their stories about their journey into investment management. See how inclusive the industry is and open to everyone with a real passion, purpose and a drive to succeed.
“Through Investment20/20 I get many chances to learn about the different aspects of the industry in formal and informal sessions. I have picked up new hard and soft skills and networked with other trainees who are building their careers. Overall, this has helped me become a more rounded individual and I am grateful to be a part of the programme
It is time for the investment industry to put allegiances to one side, and stand together to solve this challenge. Under-representation goes well beyond company loyalties. The investment industry is built on creating solutions to problems. We must come together as one to solve this.”
