Multi Asset Graduate
Why do you enjoy your job?
I work in the implementation function of the multi asset team which gives me great exposure to various asset classes including fixed income, equities and real estate. I have been able to develop a cohesive understanding of the investment universe as a whole and also about multi asset strategies.
A fast-paced and ever changing dynamic environment requires resilience and an eagerness to learn, and these are necessary every day in electing on corporate actions and viewing how equity funds will alter given different information and company news. The flat structured working environment means I am able to learn and ask questions from senior colleagues who provide invaluable insight which is great for my understanding, growth and development.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
Initially it was tricky trying to follow conversations about strategies and investment ideas, but the terminology becomes familiar over time. As this is a dynamic industry, it is necessary to deal with constant change and an abundant amount of information, but as I am someone who is motivated by challenge and is enthusiastic to learn, the nature of the job means it is well suited to me.
How did you get into your job?
I studied accounting and finance at university with the aim of developing a career in accountancy. As part of the sandwich degree I worked within a finance team as an accounts assistant for a year, and while I learnt a lot during the placement I also came to realise that a career in accountancy wasn’t the right option for me. I wanted a career in a dynamic environment but was still keen to stay within the financial services industry. While researching different career paths after graduating, I came across the asset management industry and Investment20/20. I was glad to find the various roles that were on offer through Investment20/20 and eventually found a role at Aviva Investors that suited my skillset and expectations perfectly.
What are your future aspirations?
I enjoy working in the multi asset department as there are a range of roles and functions available, such as implementation, risk and strategy, areas that I would look to focus on in the future. Currently, I am studying for the IMC as a stepping stone to the CFA, which I aim to complete in a few years as I know that the asset management industry is one that I want to progress in. Working alongside senior colleagues with many years experience, they say that most career paths do not go in a straight line and to take on opportunities that will challenge and excite you. This is advice that will stick with me and continually shape my career going forward.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
One prevailing word comes to mind; opportunity.
I have had many opportunities, from rotating around various teams in my role, to attending the regular insight events held by Investment20/20. Collectively, they provide a chance for you to learn more about the industry, build a strong professional network and gain skills that will help you develop a great foundation for the start of your career.
