LUIS TORRES FARRELL

Redington

Data Analyst

Graduate

Why do you enjoy your job?

The enjoyment comes from a combination of the new experience and new world I have got into, the meeting of very intelligent and capable people, the excitement of learning about an area so vital to economics, and the feeling that I have taken my first step towards making a social difference in the industry. My job involves reporting on fund manager performance as well as devising ways in which we can more clearly and effectively improve this process within our firm. Performance is naturally at the centre of investment management decisions and so I feel at the centre of what happens in the industry, growing and learning.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Managing my time effectively under tight timeframes to do my job to a top standard, while coming up with new ideas to better the reporting process and solve problems about areas I do not yet fully understand.

How did you get into your job?

As I got older, I became more involved in politics and social causes. At university, I took part in numerous student campaigns, was president of a political society and I was an elected counsellor throughout. Through a campaign that was pressuring the university to disinvest from arms companies, I discovered that a friend who understood the technical side of the issue was a former Investment20/20 trainee. Realising how pivotal investments are to the shaping of an economy and society, I decided to make a career in the industry following graduation. Investment20/20 gave me the encouragement to apply to an industry that seemed to belong purely to the realm of people with financial backgrounds and after two temporary jobs as a researcher, I landed my current role.

What are your future aspirations?

In the medium term I want to delve into responsible investment and help shape the way people think about saving and investing. I want to galvanise and be part of that transition to a better society.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

A learning opportunity, a door to a better future, and a window to an otherwise distant industry.
