Aberdeen Standard Investments

ESG Investment Trainee

School Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

I work in ESG (environmental, social and governance) Investment which is a really interesting department and has allowed me to learn about a part of the investment industry which I didn’t originally knew existed before joining ASI (Aberdeen Standard Investments). I have enjoyed becoming aware of many topical issues in today’s society and how this impacts investments. I love that the role is so varied meaning no two days are the same, this has also allowed me to develop a wide variety of skills.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The most challenging aspect of my job is learning how to balance everything. There is a lot going on within my role and different deadlines to adhere to. On top of this I am also studying for two qualifications, so finding the time to balance my work responsibilities whilst making sure I am dedicating enough time to revise and complete all my practical based learning work can sometimes be hard. However, I have found that once you get into the habit of prioritising the tasks, being disciplined with yourself and ensuring you use your time efficiently it is definitely manageable.

How did you get into your job?

I left school at 17 not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I knew university wasn't for me but wasn't really aware of the other options, so I worked for a year and also spent a year travelling including two months volunteering in Uganda teaching practical skills in schools. After this, I knew that I wanted to do something with my life where I can make a difference, but had never considered a career in finance! I applied for the programme not thinking I would get anywhere and now I am working in a role I love whilst still having the opportunity to learn which is brilliant.

What are your future aspirations?

My future aspirations would be to secure a permanent role at Standard Life Aberdeen, so I can continue to do a job I enjoy whilst working for a well-respected company. This will allow me to continue my professional development and gain more experience within the financial sector. I would also like to complete some further qualifications as I have loved the opportunity to develop knowledge on the financial market, particularly economics, so to develop my knowledge on these to help me with my future career would be something I would be keen to do.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

I would sum up the Investment20/20 experience as sometimes challenging but very rewarding. It has also encouraged me to take risks because a year ago I would never have pictured myself working for an asset management company and today I am so grateful I took that risk!
