FREDERICK EVANS

BMO GLOBAL ASSET MANAGEMENT

Product Development Apprentice

School Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

In my role I am constantly learning new things, from different fund structures, to strategic insights and different costing analysis. Coming from a mathematics background, I have really enjoyed some of the work that I have done around analysing profitability of new products, and feeling that off the back of my analysis, real business decision are made. I also really enjoy the charitable side of the firm that I am at, and have been involved with a variety of events, from Dragon boat racing on the Thames, to helping people with spinal cord injuries up Mount Snowdon!

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The most challenging part at the start of the job was learning the huge amount of acronyms that everyone uses. However, my most common challenge would be juggling the different tasks with different timelines. I have since put in place my own system to be able to keep on top of this easily.

How did you get into your job?

I was at the University of York for two years studying mathematics, however did not complete the course due to personal reasons. Since then I had a brief period working in hospitality at an F1 company’s research centre. Investment20/20 is a fantastic stepping stone onto the investment management ladder, helping you gain invaluable experience for the start of your career.

What are your future aspirations?

I would be hoping to stay with BMO after my year’s placement, and would look to complete my degree via distance learning whilst at the workplace. I also value personal development, and would look to complete a number of qualifications (specifically IMC and CFA). However, I have no idea what I want to do 5 or 10 years down the line!

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

Two-thirds of the way through my Investment20/20 placement, I can gladly say that I have really enjoyed the experience. The events that Investment20/20 organises are extremely informative and very well run, and I would highly recommend going to all the events you can possibly go to. These events along with the social events are a great way to network with peers from other asset managers throughout London. Overall, I would say that to a school leaver, or a graduate, the Investment20/20 scheme is a fantastic way to get a foot in the door at a firm, and a great first step into the world of work.
