DANA ANDERSON

Aberdeen Standard Investments

Apprentice

School Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

As part of my apprenticeship, I rotate to different departments every four months. This allows me to meet new people, gain a wide understanding of the business and will eventually help determine which area of the business I am best suited for, and therefore where I would like to pursue my career. The opportunity to experience different departments is what attracted me to this apprenticeship in the first place as I wasn’t entirely sure what area of work I wanted to progress in.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Changing department every four months is the most challenging part of my job, even though that is what attracted me to the apprenticeship. By the end of the rotation, you have gained confidence in your role and have a good grasp of what the team does, before you then move to a whole new team. It is exciting meeting new people and gaining new insights into what other teams do, however learning from the start every four months can be quite overwhelming.

How did you get into your job?

During my last year at school, university was the only option I considered. Even though I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do, I applied and was offered a place to study accountancy. However, one of my teachers suggested ASI’s apprenticeship since it would allow me to experience different departments within a business. After applying online, I was invited to a team building day including an informal interview, followed by two weeks’ work experience, a last interview which involved a presentation and I was then fortunately offered the job.

What are your future aspirations?

I have so far only worked in two departments so am not certain exactly where I would like to be in the future. After I have completed all my rotations, I hope to have a permanent role in an area that inspires me to be the best I can be and most importantly, a role that I love doing. I hope to be successful in what I do and to make a difference.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

I have been able to experience different opportunities and learn new skills that I would not have had through higher education. Investment20/20 has allowed me to gain an insight into working life as well as to develop as a person.
