BISMAH AIJAZ

First State Investments

Digital Marketing Trainee

School Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?
I have been lucky enough to be working with a team of people that are so welcoming, understanding and friendly. I am responsible for managing tasks independently but I also feel comfortable asking for help and know my colleagues are always happy to provide support or answer questions. I have progressed from having no direct marketing or financial experience, to a position of huge responsibility where I am able to constantly develop my skillset. From learning how to multi-task, prioritise, work under pressure, manage time to building specialist knowledge, the list of what I have learnt and hope to continue to learn is endless.

I have provided support with critical projects such as implementation of regulations, content management and social media and advertising campaigns. I have also enjoyed being able to communicate with my colleagues around the world, including Australia, USA and Hong Kong.

How did you get into your job?

Having studied humanities subjects (English Literature, Psychology and Sociology) at A level and also with only a basic level of knowledge about the investment management Industry, I was definitely nervous to even apply for a role. I had previous volunteering experience from extra-curricular activities as well as my weekend sales assistant job, but it did not relate directly to finance or business studies. I soon realised however that the Investment20/20 programme encourages applicants both with and without previous knowledge and experience in finance. Those from other backgrounds with transferable skills and the right personality traits are just as welcome as they have the potential to be just as successful! I would recommend anyone interested to simply apply the experience and knowledge gained from any academic subjects and life experiences (regardless of how insignificant they may seem) throughout the whole recruitment process.

How would you sum up your Investment2020 experience at First State Investments?

My experience has allowed me to constantly develop, grow and improve my skills and knowledge – it has been full of stimulating and exciting opportunities for continuous development.

The Investment20/20 team organises many social events and professional development opportunities which really help trainees to network and build a bigger picture of the Investment Management industry as well as the world of work.

I would strongly recommend anyone to apply and if you do, I wish you the best of luck!
