Why do you enjoy your job?

I really enjoy getting stuck into the numbers and having a good view of the inner workings of each function within the group. What is very noticeable is the level of responsibility placed on us where much of our analysis is counted on by key stakeholders across functions to make key decisions. This allows me to really take full ownership of my tasks and make sure that each of them is done both efficiently and with a high degree of accuracy. Aside from my actual work, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a talented and friendly team who have contributed so much to both enhancing my knowledge of the industry as well as my own personal growth.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The most challenging thing is probably dealing with the fast turnover of work along with the expected degree of accuracy. A lot of what I produce is used by various senior personnel for their own reporting. It is therefore essential it is sent out efficiently, so there is sufficient time to act and make decisions, but also that this information is accurate and can be trusted. Another challenge has been adapting to all the systems and technical procedures, however you quickly begin to ease into these once you start to work with them on a regular basis.

How did you get into your job?

After completing my bachelor’s degree from the University of Cape Town I managed to secure internships within sales and private equity before moving into my current role at GAM. I had always wanted to make the move over to London and work within the investment management world, prompted by my previous experience and desire to challenge and develop myself. The Investment20/20 programme offered me a great opportunity to further my career aspirations in the highly competitive investment management industry and offered me the industry insights, curiosity and network to thrive in this industry.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

Through the Investment 20/20 trainee position at GAM I gained a comprehensive overview of the investment management industry. It gave me a platform to excel in my career and showed me how valuable teamwork and people’s foresight are to be successful.
