I really enjoy having tangible problems to solve and seeing my work have real world impacts, after thirteen years of red ticks, percentages and grades written on pieces of paper. I work as a regulatory analyst, and a lot of what I do comprises manipulating data to reach zero or a target number, which I find very satisfying! I enjoy the social aspect of working in the City, and the variety of people you meet and work with every day.
When I started working at M&G, the aspect I found most challenging was learning to say no if I had been given conflicting tasks that had to be performed at the same time. I came to learn that you can never have enough communication, and it is better to let people know what your capacity is immediately, rather than at the due date of the task.
I came from a school where most students went on to study at Russell Group Universities. I did not feel passionate enough about any one discipline to commit at least three years and £50,000 to, so I paused to consider my options whilst my friends sent in their UCAS applications. I then came across the Investment20/20 website, found an opportunity with M&G that I was interested in, and applied after I had finished my A Levels. I started in October 2015.
Irreplaceable! Either as an alternative to university or as a break from mainstream education before embarking on a degree, the Investment20/20 trainee programmes and apprenticeships are a fantastic introduction to the world of asset management. You are taught everything from scratch, with no expectations other than enthusiasm, but the skills (and often qualifications) you gain will benefit you for years.
