Currently I am an Apprentice at Aberdeen Standard Investments. The reason I enjoy my job is because of the great amount of opportunity and responsibility you can have working here. I relish meeting new people and learning about different departments across the business.
I also enjoy my role as it allows me to gain valuable experience that I wouldn’t have gained through higher education. I can’t deny it is very attractive and beneficial to earn and learn at the same time, I also bypass any student debt I could’ve accumulated while still gaining qualifications while working. As an apprentice at ASI I am currently completing my IOC (investments Operations Certificate).
Working in Risk and Compliance, I would have to say the hardest part of the Job is dealing with opposing opinions. Considering the nature of the job, you find a lot of the time, key stakeholders will not agree with operational enhancements. I find the best way to amend this is to gather everyone and brainstorm to find a collective solution to fit everyone’s needs.
I joined ASI at 17. I had completed my Highers and decided that the further education path was not currently for me. Leaving with good grades gave me a sense of security to enter the world of work and then review the opportunity of going to university in the future. However, once starting work for ASI I quickly came to realise I had made the right decision and gained a wealth of knowledge and contacts in the business.
I Would like to continue within ASI and gain professional qualifications (focusing on the IOC and IMC) whilst working.
I have no regrets. The scheme is perfect for me and there are real opportunities for anyone looking to be involved in the investment management industry. I would always encourage others to apply.
