I work within GAM’s London-based PR team which covers external communications across the UK, US and Asia, as well as internal communications. I enjoy my role as it involves working with all levels of management in the company, together with talented writers and journalists in the industry. Having exposure to such a wide base of knowledge and experience creates a new learning curve every day, and results in lots of professional growth.
When I started my role, one of the greatest challenges was the sheer volume of unfamiliar phrases and terms. This made it difficult for me to work through tasks, but it did get easier with time just like any new “language” does.
I returned to London after being away for a number of years and decided to go straight into the world of work rather than attend university. I heard about the Investment20/20 programme through someone in the asset management industry and saw it as the perfect opportunity to launch my career. Since both people and writing are interests of mine that I wanted to develop, applying for my current role was really a no-brainer.
In the short term I am pursuing my IMC (Investment Management Certificate) and taking up a professional writing course in my own time – which in my view is very complementary, matching my practical knowledge with professional qualifications.
In the longer term I would like to pursue a role which utilises the skills I have learnt, but also allows me to face and overcome new challenges.
My tip for trainees would be that it doesn’t matter how small or obvious, no question is a silly question.
