BMO Global Asset Management

Product Control Apprentice |
School/College Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

I have found product control to be a fantastic department to work in as it provides an insight into all aspects of the business. My role has allowed me to work with numerous people from the investment teams to marketing. This has given me an in depth understanding of the workings of both the business and industry as a whole. I have also found staying in one department, rather than rotating between teams, very useful as it has meant I have been able to get really involved, rather than just being a passive observer.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Having studied economics at school, I was aware of the different types of securities and their individual characteristics. However I knew very little about the day to day workings of funds and trusts and the different characteristics of each type of fund in the market. It was learning the specifics of how these products work while getting to grips with the technical terms and acronyms attached to these products that proved to be the biggest challenge for me.

How did you get into your job?

At sixth form I wanted to consider all my options rather than just going to university without giving it a second thought. While doing some research I stumbled across the Investment20/20 website and realised that it provided exactly the kind of opportunity I was looking for. I chose BMO because I found it to be the most welcoming and friendly of the companies I was interested in.

What are your future aspirations?

While I have no definite long-term plans, I would very much like to continue working in asset management, because I have found it a very enjoyable and engaging industry to work in. However, I haven’t decided if there is a particular area of the industry I would like to specialise in.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

I have found the experience hugely enjoyable. Every day is different and presents me with new challenges. The events put on by Investment20/20 for the trainees have also been a great opportunity not only to learn more about the industry but also to get to know other trainees across the programme.
