Compliance Trainee |
School/College Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

I work in the compliance department at Jupiter. My role varies from ongoing reviews of different areas in the business, to investigating potential policy breaches and alerts on our investment management system. I also undertake surveillance activities, as well as reviewing and maintaining staff personal account dealing records. There is a high level of exposure to different departments across the company, which is extremely valuable for a trainee such as myself. My role therefore not only develops my understanding of compliance, but of the business and industry as a whole.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

A challenging aspect of the job at first is dealing with the terminology that is used in the financial industry. There are a lot of new terms and abbreviations and it can be difficult to remember all of them. I found that studying the first CFA qualification offered to me by Jupiter helped me a great deal when it came to understanding all the jargon, as well as learning the core activities of other business areas before I interacted with them. It is also a challenge to get to know the activities of the many different areas of the business. In order to conduct reviews and assess regulation regarding other departments, you must first understand what they do and the procedures and policies behind them.

How did you get into your job?

I am a school leaver with A levels in Law, Politics & Business. I finished my A Levels, then worked in retail & volunteered locally while looking for a position in the asset management industry. I applied to multiple firms through the Investment20/20 website, and joined Jupiter Asset Management after completing the recruitment process.

What are your future aspirations?

Regarding future aspirations, I have already passed my first CFA exam and aim to continue studying in order to pass the further exams that are available. I aspire to achieve a permanent role here at Jupiter and continue learning and gaining expertise in relevant parts of the industry whilst gaining further qualifications.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

My Investment20/20 experience has been extremely helpful. The ongoing events and social meet-ups held throughout the year allow you to settle into the industry alongside peers who are in the same situation. The opportunity to go into full time employment inside a firm within the industry is invaluable for young people such as myself, especially if you aren’t completely sure of the job role that you want to get into. The year-long contract allows you to get a real look inside the industry and feel exactly what it’s like to work in it.
