I currently work in the external reporting team within the finance department. I produce some of the accounts for our subsidiary companies and also manage end of month postings. I enjoy my role as it provides me with great exposure to the industry and all the different components within finance which opens up different opportunities.
The most challenging thing so far has been to understand how the industry works as a whole and all the financial jargon. Thankfully, with Henderson sponsoring the IMC, this is getting easier and shouldn’t be a challenge for long. However saying this, it is also very challenging to manage work and studies simultaneously.
I applied to Janus Henderson Investors as a trainee just after I graduated from City University in Mathematics. With the choice of degree, I knew I wanted to be in the finance industry and in the City, but I had no idea how to get that first foot in the door. I heard about the trainee scheme at Henderson through someone that worked here and it seemed a perfect opportunity for me.
For the short term, I plan to sit the IMC to broaden my knowledge of the industry and secure a permanent role at the end of the trainee contract.
For the long term, I plan to either sit the CFA or the actuarial exams making my way to a role where my numerical skills can be challenged.
Investment20/20 is an amazing opportunity that helps young adults get that first foot in the door. Not only does it help you get in, but it provides you with lots of opportunities outside your role and your firm throughout your contract and after. The best part is it gives you exposure to such a valuable network of people from across the whole industry.
