My role involves processing sales and redemption trades on behalf of our clients in Asia. The master agent sends these over every morning and I have to ensure the transactions are processed efficiently, the correct entries are made for payments and pre-advices and the relevant contract notes are sent to our clients the following morning. Trades can be up to the value of £500,000. Handling these large figures fuels me with responsibility and allows me to widen my knowledge of an area I am keen to explore. It has allowed me to understand the cycle of placing a trade from the initial client request to creating the contract note along with resolving and identifying any errors along the way. I have also been working on a due diligence project looking at the risk rating of our distributors which I found particularly interesting as it was quite different to my other daily tasks.
As a trainee entering the investment management industry with limited knowledge, there is so much to learn. I believe this will come with time, the key is to stay focused and continue to ask questions when unsure. It can also be daunting when you are surrounded by industry experts and need to ask them about meetings and to sign off documents, although I feel this is an area I am working on and progressing with.
Studying Economics at The University of Sheffield confirmed to me that a career in financial services is my chosen route. I feel that the analytical skills I gained from the course have prepared me well for the investment management industry. After completing a summer internship and returning to university for my final year I came across an Investment20/20 opportunity and applied without hesitation. I am grateful for the opportunity, allowing me to get my foot in the door of such a competitive industry and to gain the knowledge I have to date.
My aim is to explore the various avenues available within the investment management industry and follow the path which will enable me to grow as an individual, inside and outside of the working environment. I feel it is extremely important to be in a role where you can progress and enjoy what you do.
Challenging, yet rewarding.
