Harrison Crossley

Information Security Trainee |
School/College Leaver

Why do you enjoy your job?

My team of seven is responsible for the cyber security of the business. This can range from dealing with virus infections on machines to ensuring that sensitive data isn’t leaked from the business. It is one of the most exciting departments to work in as no one day is the same. Every member of my team has different experience and background, giving me a huge breadth of knowledge to draw upon. Despite Schroders being a huge company I don’t feel like a small cog in a giant machine.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Coming into my role I was a bit apprehensive as I didn’t know much about information security. However after a few months of hands on experience my knowledge had grown substantially. Working in a great environment and using industry leading tools really made learning and getting to grips with my role easy. I have also been provided with excellent training ranging from how to be more confident, writing skills in a business environment through to taking a professional qualification.

How did you get into your job?

After a two year BTEC Diploma in Business studies I began looking for apprenticeships as I decided that university wasn’t for me. I came across the Investment2020 website, and submitted an application to Schroders. I did a video interview followed by an assessment day including a group project with five other applicants. I was then offered a 12 month contract on the scheme.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

The opportunities, insights and networks this scheme has given me have been invaluable. I have been able to network with 30 other trainees within Schroders, as well as many more at investment companies across London. Through Investment20/20 I was asked to speak about my role in cyber security at a careers talk, which then led to an invitation to represent tech apprenticeships in front of senior members of companies such as Bank of America, Google and Barclays. It was an incredible experience. Without Investment20/20 I don’t think I would have been able to get into a career in the investment sector. Even if I am not asked to stay on at Schroders after my traineeship, I can be confident that I have a lot to offer a future employer.
