Why do you enjoy your job?

My role is working in the portfolio services operations department at Schroders as a trainee in specialist investigations reconciliations. It involves analysing discrepancies between transactions made by Schroders and the reflected custodian’s position. I enjoy learning more about different types of instruments that asset managers use to increase value. It has also allowed me to learn more about the way that different firms interact with each other on a transactional level. It is important that what we do is accurate and reliable so I would say it has helped me to be a more detail driven person – I would strive to do my job effectively rather than quickly.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Since starting, the most challenging aspect of my role has simply been adapting to the work-life schedule and balance. I have come directly from school and was accustomed to shorter days and smaller workloads. Although you will receive the assistance and training you need, it will always be a big change to move on from school to full time employment. Nevertheless, I enjoy the greater level of responsibility that I have been given and feel that this is what motivates me to perform to the best of my abilities.

How did you get into your job?

Coming from school I was almost certain that I didn’t want to go to university post A-Levels. I decided I wanted to start working and earning for myself. The Investment20/20 opportunity was recommended to me by one of my parents’ connections in industry. She had also been an Investment20/20 trainee and had only positive things to say about the experience. I thought this would be an excellent chance for me to start earning and learning in a vast and dynamic industry. I still believe this to be correct eight months down the line.

What are your future aspirations?

I cannot say where I will be in 10 years’ time nor do I know yet where I want to be. However, this experience has been an excellent chance for me to learn more about myself, including what I do and don’t like doing. One thing I do hope is that I will be able to stay at Schroders as I progress through the next stages of my career. I have enjoyed the environment, the people, and the ethos of the firm and believe it is an excellent place for someone to begin their career.

How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?

Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying my Investment20/20 experience and believe it has helped me to develop at a much faster rate than I might have elsewhere. However, I would say it is important to remember that this is not just a job it is an opportunity. Getting the job is just the first test.
