Why do you enjoy your job?
Currently I am an apprentice at Aberdeen Asset Management* PLC. The reason I enjoy my job is being given the opportunity to rotate around different departments and strive to be the best I can possibly be. From these rotations I can set myself up to mould my own career and progress in the department that I feel I fit into as well as make connections throughout the UK. I can be a part of 6 teams over my 2 year apprenticeship which include Risk, Investment Operations, IT, Business Systems, Internal Audit, Investor Services, HR, Finance and Compliance.
Not only do I get on the job experience but I’m also earning while working. And within my first year of the apprenticeship I will complete a Digital Applications SVQ Diploma, which is an added bonus.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
The most challenging thing about my job is leaving one department and joining another You’re just getting good at something and then it’s time to say goodbye and join a team where you have no clue what you’re doing, which is slightly frustrating. But with the good support in each team it allows you to get on your feet in no time.
How did you get into your job?
Getting my job was no easy task. On finishing school, neither university nor college appealed to me as I’d feel like I was wasting my time. I found out about my apprenticeship role through a friend who recommended the job to me. After applying and having an initial meeting I was offered a two week work experience role to see how I fitted in within the office. Then following a further two months as an intern I was offered an apprenticeship contract and happily accepted.
What are your future aspirations?
I hope to be the best that I can be in a work sense and as a person. I feel that the environment of AAM will allow my optimistic and goal orientated nature improve and develop.
How would you sum up your Investment20/20 experience?
The programme has given me the opportunity to be further ahead than my peers because I am learning and earning cohesively. It also opens numerous doors in the financial industry I wouldn’t have been exposed to through any other programme.
