Every day there are new and exciting tasks and opportunities for me to get involved in. I interact with multiple areas of the business and get to learn about how each part of the company works, or perhaps doesn’t work. A key part of my role is to review and analyse an error within a process, and doing so I get to speak and build relationships with lots of different people within the company in all sorts of roles, which is something I love being able to do.
I have always found it hard to reach out and ask people who I may not know very well for help and when I first started in my role, I would often put off speaking to new people and asking them for guidance when I needed it, which would just prolong a task and not help anyone. Over the months I have learnt that it’s ok to ask for help, and everyone is willing to take a few minutes out of their day to explain something to you.
Up until my last few months of sixth form, I wanted to go to university to study economics. It wasn’t until I started to revise for my A-Level exams that I realised university wasn’t for me and I wanted to look into other options. I found the apprenticeship for Aberdeen Standard Investments listed on the Investment20/20 website and applied. Since then I haven’t looked back and I know I have definitely made the right decision.
I want to continue working in the financial services industry, slowly working my way up the ladder to management positions. I’m not sure where exactly in finance I see myself in 5 years’ time, however I know that in an industry like this, the opportunities are limitless, as so many skills and so much of the knowledge you pick up on the way is transferable.
Investment20/20 has been great from the moment I joined. The frequent talks and lectures on various subjects within the finance industry have been so insightful and interesting. The social aspect of investment20/20 has also been amazing. Through all of the events I have been able to talk to other apprentices in similar positions at so many other companies. Being able to build my network at such a young age is something not many people get to do, so it is amazing that I have this chance.
