I work in the data management office, which doesn’t sound too interesting at all. However, my job constantly challenges me, whether it is through resolving complex queries or completing new projects which are always unique. I’m lucky as my current role requires connections in many teams company wide, so no day is ever the same. It also allows me to build my network and develop my understanding of team roles within the business.
Initially, the most challenging aspect was adjusting to working life. I’ve had jobs and work prior to this, but getting an 8-5:30 daily job was definitely a shock to the system. However, as time has gone on the challenge has moved from adjusting to managing my work load. Despite only being an administrator, I have taken on numerous tasks related more to an analyst role in order to challenge and develop myself. The organisation required at work compared to school is incredibly different.
I got the job as a school leaver, so this would have technically been my gap year if I was choosing to go to university. I was looking for a whole variety of financial jobs from trainee brokers to accountancy roles. I attended one of the Investment20/20 insight evenings after reading about the company in an article, a week later I applied for a vacancy here at LGIM and haven’t looked back since.
My short term goal (one year) is to progress to a financial analyst role. In the long term, I’m looking to move either to LDI (liability driven investment) or a fund management position.
It is well known how difficult it is to get your foot into the door of the financial services sector, especially with no degree behind you. Investment20/20 was the platform I needed to allow me to do this, and their continued efforts with members organising events such as socials and insight talks is something I will always appreciate.
