I like the dynamic nature of my role and that no two days are ever the same. Sitting in the compliance team I watch new regulations come into force continually. This has enabled me to work across many different projects impacting either on the whole business or individual business units. My team is there to ensure that the business is robustly functioning to meet our regulatory obligations. We manage the relationship between the business and the regulators ensuring that the firm stays on top of its regulatory obligations but can also thrive in a business sense.
I would say that there is a lot to learn in compliance. It is a subject heavy area and requires you to understand both the business and the rules that govern our trade. You will constantly be learning something new, using your problem solving skills to apply what you are learning and what you understand to help the business solve its regulatory objectives.
Whilst in sixth form, I completed a week of work experience at Cambridge Associates, an investment consulting firm. This was my very first exposure to investment management and I can say without a doubt that it was the best week of the entire two years of sixth form. Before that point, I hadn’t considered the industry as an option, but walking around the trading floor was such a fantastic experience that I started to do a bit more research and I even started reading the Financial Times to learn about an industry that had captured my interest. My research led me to Investment20/20. I knew that I wanted to get out there and gain some work experience, and Investment20/20 has been the perfect platform to accelerate that journey.
The insight that Investment20/20 has given me has been really eye opening. Every event that is scheduled leaves you with something useful to take away, for example advice on how to transition from school to work or how to be a more rounded person generally. The industry speakers are great too, especially in advising you how to make your way in the sector. At the end, you leave with more clarity, confidence and understanding.
