As a portfolio analyst my role involves using various software to extract performance and risk data that is later used by; fund managers, in marketing material and in compliance documents. The best thing about this role is how dynamic it is, there are many opportunities to learn something new either about specific datapoints (And how they’re used to asses the fund) or learning the capabilities of analytical software. I would have never had the chance to learn how to use a Bloomberg terminal or attend a fund manager team meeting if I went to university, and I think that’s the best aspect of my job, the opportunities that it gives.
You have to be very accurate with what you are doing. This is something that is very important in this role, regardless of the time pressure and workload you need to have an eye for details to catch out any small mistakes in the data being sent out. Over time this becomes easier as you get more efficient with the way that you check things and with the way you produce reports, however you constantly have to be 100% focused to not make any mistakes.
In my last few months at college I came across a few articles that explained why many university graduates struggle to find jobs in a role that they studied. I still applied to UCAS and went through with my university application however I thought that I might look into other ways to get into the asset management industry. I found the Investment20/20 website and sent my application to Jupiter, as they had this role open. One telephone call and an interview later I was given a contract. I signed it a week before my UCAS results came in, it was too good an opportunity to pass on.
I want to complete my IMC qualification this year and then complete all 3 levels of the CFA qualification year after year. If it all works out, I’ll be a charter holder by the age of 22. I have enjoyed my time at Jupiter, and I would like to continue working in the asset management industry to hopefully become a fund manager one day.
Challenging, interesting and enjoyable.
