Being a Finance trainee at Rothschild & Co has given me the exposure to work in many different areas within the Finance department. Whilst working in finance I have had the opportunity to work with many different teams within the business, including; Tax, Global Advisory Finance, Treasury and Accounts Receivable. Working with these teams has allowed me to broaden my understanding of finance. As well as being able to adapt my knowledge, I have been able to improve my communication skills, I have improved my communication skills by liaising with different colleagues and customers on a day to day basis.
During my time at Rothschild & Co, I have also had the opportunity to be involved with a few larger projects, this has enabled me to enhance my innovative and problem solving skills, and this has helped me in finding a faster way of solving problems or completing tasks.
Rothschild & Co have a great family culture throughout the entire business, and it really shows from the employees I work with and have met over my time here.
One challenge I have faced so far is adapting to the different phrases and terminology used. When in discussions with other team members, I sometimes need things explained to me, but everyone has been so helpful and patient with explaining things to me. I have also found using the different technology and software quite challenging, this takes some getting used to but you do get the hang of things after a while.
In 2016 I completed my GCSE’s, and I didn’t necessarily get what you would call the “best” grades, this meant that I was restricted on what A Levels I could do. After some thought, I decided to study a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Business. Whilst studying at Sixth Form, I completed three weeks’ worth of work experience at two different Banks in London, this was a good choice for me because I always knew I wanted to go down the business/finance route.
During my last year at Sixth Form, I started applying for jobs within the business and finance sectors. After applying to many roles, which lead to many rejections and different interviews, my hard work and determination helped me get a role with Rothschild & Co.
My advice would be that you are going to get knockdowns in life; it’s just how you react to them. If you put your mind to something, nobody can stop you.
I have been on the scheme for 7 months now, and I believe it has been very beneficial for many different reasons. The main reason why I believe the Investment20/20 programme is a good initiative is because it gives you a chance to network and meet new people in the business. Not only have I had the chance to meet people my own age, who are in similar positions as me, but I have also had the chance to connect with senior member of staff at other companies in the industry. The events that Investment20/20 run are great! It means you can learn more about the industry you are in, and it enables you to develop more skills to enhance your chances of progressing in the role that you are in.
